Weaving a Revolution: A Celebration of Contemporary Navajo Baskets

This special exhibition showcased 150 contemporary Navajo baskets to tell the story of the people who made them and created a new art form in the process. I worked with Navajo artists, scholars, curators, content developers, writers, filmmakers, photographers and collectors to organize this layered story within the space.

The entrance to the exhibit is wrapped with an image of Monument Valley to introduce our visitor to place and give them a chance to walk in the beautiful landscape that influences many of the artists. We used video, large images, and sound to give context to the baskets and introduce visitors to the artists who created them. Upon entering the exhibit, visitors were greeted by an “explosion” of baskets representing the diversity of form, color and imagery. The interpretive graphics were understated. Images of landscape were large and evocative. We used close-ups of baskets and basketmakers to highlight process and people.
