The Man of La Mancha (Porondszinhaz)

My long term collaboration with Peter Fekete continued with him Directing this play in Porondszinhaz. Set in 1956 Hungary, a makeshift prison within a circus arena has been constructed. The idea was that the circus whilst under "lock-down" provided the prisoners with the environment to create the imaginations of Don Quixote. The aerial artists in character then faciliated complicated scene changes. But with this production we steered away from using hydraulics and preferred to use manual machinery and ropes...giving the whole piece a more raw feel and also of the period and the feeling that these people used their suitcases that held their wordly possessions to create another world. The most spectacular moment was when Quixote sings The Impossible Dream. As he sings the prisoners build a suitcase staircase supported underneath by themselves. When Quixote reaches the top, the prisoners move away leaving the stairs with Quixote on and intact...magic!
