The Blonde Hurricane - National Theatre of Hungary
This was my second show at the National Theatre of Hungary (Nemzeti Szinhaz). Working with Madhouse Theatre Company, and like our first devised show, we came up with an idea of basing the show on the Hungarian author P.Howard's (Rejto Jeno) book, "The Blonde Hurriance" (Csozke Cziklon).
We workshopped the piece for a month and from rehearsals I designed the show on site in the rehearsal room as the actors improvised each scene.
Madhouse show's are about motifs..finding one image or a simple prop or piece of clothing to denote a space or period of time. With only two actors telling this mammoth tale in 1 hour playing over 20 different characters at a furious pace the job was a hard one!
The main idea behind style was to make it cartoon meets pop art and so I created very simple static back projected images that set the scene for each scene.
My approach to this as with all Madhouse shows was the "Jamie Oliver" approach.....everything pared back to the bare essentials!
