This production is a famous Hungarian operetta. Working with Director, Maria Harangi, I designed the costumes for this production. Having worked on many musicals with Maria, we decided to go a little more abstract with the designs but still keep the traditional "operetta feel". With this production I wanted the fabrics to do the talking and we spent many weeks sourcing the best fabrics we could from suppliers in Turkey and locally too.
Set in an Escher style castle world nothing was quite what it seemed and the introduction of ghosts gave the operetta a really different dimension that the Hungarian audience had never seen before with this operetta.
The most difficult thing with this production was getting the two elderley sisters correct. The idea and plotline is they make their own dinner dresses and so there had to be an element of "home-made" but still keep the elegance and we introduced some very garish fabrics too!
