Normally reviewing U2 albums when they come out is a pretty fruitless exercise for me, because it takes a while—sometimes years—to come to a definitive opinion on them. Some have grown on me over time (like “Rattle & Hum”); others, not so much. “Songs of Innocence” is a particularly hard album to analyze; while the album feels whole, Bono stated in an essay a companion album called “Songs of Experience” is nearly finished and should be out, in his words, “soon enough” (tho in “U2 Time,” who knows how long “soon enough” is). Reviewing “Songs of Innocence” at this point feels like giving a season recap of “Breaking Bad” after only seeing the first six episodes. Of course, that won’t stop me from doing it anyway. In a way, seeing “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” is a little like attending a NASCAR race: Are you going for the race or are you going for the crashes? Some people will see it because of the pedigree of the creative team (the songs are by Bono and the Edge, and the book is written and the show directed by Julie Taymor). Other people enter the theater like auto enthusiasts attending Talladega, waiting through the pit stops and occasional rain delays while eagerly anticipating "The Big One" to happen.
