PAUL RAND - CHALLENGE I was challenged to redesign a Paul Rand Essay. I had to use the existing text and images from an article by Paul Rand entitled Design and the Play Instinct, I was asked to develop and utilize a grid system in the layout of a book. SOLUTION I created a simple three column grid to help organize and balance my text and visual materials. Because the essay is about design’s relationship to the instinct to play, the variation in the layout was meant to surprise the viewer.
SFMOMA NEWS - CHALLENGE I was assigned to design a monthly publication for San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, a mailer and the posters of featuring three graphic designers from the given list. The publication, SFMOMA News must include covers, table of contents, calendar, timeline of one of three graphic designers, and one spread per each designer. SOLUTION I chose four women graphic designers, Lucille Tenazas, Zuzana Licko, April Greiman and Barbara Kruger as the featuring designers of the month. I created intro pages for each designers which reflect their characteristic of their works. The bar consists of many squares is a graphic element that constantly changes with different content or images.
SHOE - CHALLENGE I was challenged to catalog a subject of personal interest from which I could compile a group of items or experiences to study, compare, and exhibit. The catalog must include eighteen spreads plus covers, a written narratives of 500 words or more, photography and a visual explanation. SOLUTION I chose to catalog my collection of shoes. Not only this book is to find a subject of universal interest, but to find one of my personal interest, and describe it as richly as possible. It is simplistic in the sense that it is light on written description. I took something pretty ordinary into something surprising by using quite, elegant type and strong and bold photography.
