Unsustainable manufacturing processes have been the norm since the industrial revolution, and the poorest populations/planet have paid the price. How can we rethink the creative process to leave things better than we found them?
I developed a moodboard for the brand that inspired the collection, and the material and color applications I wanted to explore.
The process for creating goods is linear, with the majority of waste at the beginning and end of the process. So why are we neglecting the first stage?
While the numbers convey a sobering reality, it’s not the full story. There are innovations in place that provide a new, or rather a revision on a previous way, of creating products at scale.
For the scope of this project, I chose to focus on the opportunities of mushroom leather. Mushroom leather, as is being applied through Mylo and MycoWorks can reduce water waste and provide an alternative to traditional leather without synthetic materials.
I taught myself how to use a 3D clothing design program for pattern production and iterations on the main design.
I taught myself how to sew and went through several iterations before achieving the final look, as pictured here.
While the traditional lifecycle of a product is linear, with implementations of natural materials and processes, we could achieve a circular life cycle.

Unsustainable manufacturing processes have been the norm since the industrial revolution, and the poorest populations/planet have paid the price.
What would the future of design look like if we grew our products instead of manufacturing them?
This was my main goal for this project, in researching and understanding the impact of materials and manufacturing on the footprint of the product. For this project, I honed in on the impact of clothing both on identity and environment. I designed with the innovative mushroom leather, a material that can greatly reduce the water use of a product, as well as degrade naturally.
