PROJECT #3 is a bungalow in an exclusive residential enclave of 106 semi-detached houses and 3 bungalows in Singapore. The bungalow was envisioned, in the Master Plan, as 1 of the 2 buildings that provide visual ‘break’ to a group of semi-detached houses strung together like a ‘necklace’. The bungalow is sited on a long and linear site, devoid of views. To avoid a wall-like structure, achieve a scale compatible with its smaller ‘neighbours’ and introduce courtyards for internal views, the permissible building volume was fragmented into smaller volumes of one-room depth. The smaller building volumes ensure that all the interior spaces receive light, ventilation and views and are autonomous and independent of each other. Equipped with a comfortable equation of communality and privacy, the massing and planning sync with the programme of a multi-generational home. The result is an architecture of prismatic, tower-like structures interspersed amongst courtyards and linked by a ‘connector’.

The permissible building mass was fragmented into smaller masses of one-room depth to avoid a wall-like structure and achieve a scale compatible with its smaller neighbours.
Smaller building masses, when pulled apart, result in ‘gaps’ that ensure interior spaces receive ventilation, light and views from all sides.
The ‘gap’ frames the sky and defines the entry to the house.
The ‘gaps’ ensure that rooms and spaces are autonomous and independent of each other and equipped with a comfortable equation of communality and privacy.
The ‘gaps’ are courtyards that extend below ground to ensure that the living quarter, for the secondary household, at subterranean level also receives light and ventilation.
Landscaping within the sunken courtyards give the subterranean spaces, devoid of external views, internal views of greenery.
Moving within the interior of the bungalow, one experiences alternating quality of light and shade and orchestrated views of landscaped courtyards.
Ascending the stairs, from the subterranean level, one encounters views of courtyards and gardens at various levels.
Arriving at the 2nd level is the ‘Black Connector’ that links the prismatic ‘towers’; The massing and planning sync with the programme of a multi-generational home.
Within the ‘towers’ are lofty rooms that are autonomous and independent of each other.
Leaving behind the 2nd level, the living quarter dedicated to the main household, the open-riser staircase takes one up to the attic level.
The Family Area at the attic level, of the main household, with a commanding view of the estate.
Stepping out of the Family Area onto the Roof Terrace with a ‘cut-out’, on a sloping roof, that frames the sky and passing clouds.
At the Rear Garden, at 1st level , is a view of the bungalow that complements its smaller ‘neighbours’ in scale.
An Architecture of prismatic sand-coloured ‘towers’ interspersed amongst courtyards linked by the ‘Black Connector’.
