This capacitive touch handrail solution arose from problems gathered from research done in child and elderly safety. Interviews with staff from John's Hopkins CARES (Children Are Safe) mobile safety center, and testing of prototypes at Port Discovery Children's Museum led to this design. Many falls down the stairs happen from not holding the handrail, this product solves the problem by being pleasant to the touch. This rail is sanded smooth and illuminates, thereby inviting people to properly grasp the rail as they use the stairs. Electrical components completed by Robert Joslyn, RIT.
