Mara's Temptation originated from Buddhism, in which Gautama went and sat under the Bodhi tree facing east and resolved not to arise until enlightenment was attained.
Mara is the personification of death, delusion, and temptation. As she watched Gautama, she she grew alarmed that maybe the bodhisattva will attain the goal and escape the world of Samsara.
