I decided to apply the rules of the golden ratio to Cillian's design and use it to give it controlled proportion. It's a method that has been used down through the ages in architecture, design and is found in nature. The wooden arch has been retained and fitted into a precast, polished concrete base designed to hold a variety of fittings.
The main idea behind this interpretation was to extend the use of the base and for a minimal investment create a range of products. Rather than offering just a floor lamp, the customer can choose from a range of different inserts which would suit various different room and locations in a house.
To visualize the concept, I made a 1:5 scale model of my concept. The base is hand-carved from modeling foam and the wooden insert has been recreated using cardboard.

FUSE - Crafts Council of Ireland

While working with Perch I worked with the Crafts Council of Ireland on an initiative they put together called FUSE. It involved pairing up with a crafts person that had an idea they wanted to bring to market. In our case, Cillian Johnston had designe a floor lamp that he wanted to put into production. We were asked to reinterpret his design from both an aesthetic and a production standpoint.
