In this exercise, we analyzed the qualities of three rocks and created a vessel that reflected those attributes. I wanted to create a vessel that reflected the organic shape of the rocks as well as the depth from the spots on the surface of the rocks. Then, I added surface detail on the flanges that emphasized the negative space between the rocks. These details were created by raising and lowering sections of the flange.
In this side view, the use of negative space is evident. With the upper flange, I raised a section and in the bottom flange, I lowered it. This way, a connection between the two flanges could be established.
Process Beginning iteration sketches for vessel.
More process. One major issue I had during this project was to create a form that was organic, but not too organic that each curve looked arbitrary. By drawing many variations, I was able to come to a conclusion.
