With this exercise, we used the proportions of our chosen book to create a reading stool made up of only 90 degree angles. Throughout this project, I was aiming to create a wide sitting area that would be solid and stable, in both visual and physical contexts. Our given material was a 60"x10" poplar board.
In addition to having right angles, the stool also needed to incorporate a book of our choice. I wanted to place the book in order for it to be visually apparent. By placing it in the middle, a person has to pull it out before using the stool to read.
The context that I designed this stool for was to be used in a library or book store. Besides being a reading stool, it can be used as a step stool.
