Menstruation and sanitary waste management are topics that have been hushed up and surrounded by myths and taboos in India for very long.
There is a general lack of awareness and information regarding menstruation.All the practices that were started off in the olden days to provide comfort to women during menstruation, have now turned into a curse.
Not only women face the consequences of these behaviors. All the stakeholders in the system: men, women and children are affected. Littering with sanitary waste, unhygienic practices while menstruating, secrecy, social barriers between boys and girls, girls dropping out of school – these are all effects of wrong perceptions about menstruation.
We are a group of four product design student who worked on this project as a part of our Systems design course at the National Institute of Design, Ahmadabad.
