Shop front at night
The blank, stark and somewhat greasy canvas before installation
The Parlour - Gold paint was used to accent the curved wall and accent the richness of a plush setting
The Parlour - Curtains were installed for atmosphere and function - for privacy and to soften the space in noise and looks. Customers regularly closed them for intimate coffee conversations, dates and to block out afternoon sun
Old Persia by day was designed as a floor-seating arrangement. To enable guests to feel relaxed and comfortable beside guests seated at normal tables, the space was raised with a false floor
Old Persia could quickly be transformed into a small stage area without losing any of its tent-style setting
The Moroccan Quarter was by far the most popular setting for Mum's groups and teenagers. Facilitated by an old comfy couch, and curtained off area perfect for communal gatherings. The faux-tile wall was created with an old doona cover
Japan was created as a more comfortable setting for less able-bodied customers

cafe calma Branding and Interior Design

Conceived as a travelling caravan-style tea shop inspired by trade routes and teas from around the world, cafe calma started as a pop-up tea shop at markets. Within a year it moved into bricks and mortar posing an interesting challenge: how to recreate the intimate and other-world atmosphere of a small tea shop in a large, stark, concrete space on a limited budget.
Using recycled and upcycled materials, the space was transformed into a series of 'rooms' affording customers a different experience each visit; The Moroccan Quarter, Japan, China, Old Persia, The Parlour and the Turkish Tea Room were designed based on the characteristics of traditional spaces, furniture, patterns and colours from those countries.
The cafe was also designed to be dual purpose, allowing for a small stage and more open setting to accommodate larger informal groups at night.
