Depth of field is the distance between the nearest and the furthest objects that give an image judged to be in focus in a camera. A shallow depth of field uses a limited, selective focus so that the object is in focus whereas the background may not be. Aperture has a very large impact on DOF. The smaller the aperture, the greater the DOF. For an expansive depth of field, all of the elements are in focus and the aperture is small--this is common with landscapes since the elements are the same distance away, whereas a portrait or in photographing a subject, the subject may be much closer than the background elements.
