The surprisingly large number of parts that make up a traditional umbrella allow for that many things to go wrong. Once an umbrella is broken in a storm, it is very difficult to fix. This also makes some manual umbrellas (automatic umbrellas means more parts) inconvenient to open and close, especially for those with limited fine motor skills, or while wearing gloves.
