Ideation of various outdoor furniture for the Pit. On the far left is my idea of an "organic hammock" that has the likeness of a sculpture. Each square is 6 ft. x 6 ft. in the scale model and would accommodate an individual on each square. The middle section is of the mosaic picnic benches I want to incorporate in the Pit design. The mosaic would serve as a common visual language while providing an artsy, colorful flair. On the right are some outdoor furniture ideas.
Photos of my sketch model of my idea for the redesign of the Pit. The white cylinders represent structures with heaters on the lower half and a canopy of colorful lights that make up the upper half. The photo on the right shows a detail shot of the organic hammock.

Redesign of the Pit

The purpose of this project was to redesign the Pit in the context of the College of Design and make a 3D drop-in model to scale.
After analyzing the levels, circulation, materials, lighting, and larger context of the Pit, my redesign of the Pit addresses the following issues: the lighting, the lack of seating, and the lack of diversity in the materials. The current Pit is an unwelcoming transition zone, and the new design of the Pit will make it a pleasant transition zone as well as a destination for students to relax. The new design is much more open, introduces various materials besides the brick, accommodates students with ample amount of seating, and has the same colorful visual language throughout.
