Casement Window Operator Mechanism
The Desert Courtyard House designed by architect Wendell Burnette featured several 13 foot tall 700 lbs casement window panels. Manually operated mechanisms designed to open and close the window panels incorporated custom drive chains that flexed in one direction, yet were rigid in the opposite, to function as hold open struts. The mechanism features a bronze planetary gear system that triples the drive shaft revolutions for each turn of the handle.
