Queen Mary - Their Finest Hours
The Queen Mary
Long Beach, CA • opened 2017
Developed with Picnic Design
Originally built as a luxury cruise ship, the Queen Mary was converted into a troopship at the beginning of World War II and painted a camouflage silver, earning it the nickname “Grey Ghost”. With the capacity to transport 16,000 troops at 30 knots, she was the largest and fastest troopship of her time.
Few public figures have had more influence on modern political and social life than former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. Fewer still had an ongoing relationship with the Queen Mary. The exhibit explores Churchill's deep connection with the ship and features a wide range of personal items and artifacts and traces this remarkable and somewhat unknown chapter in the ship's history. The exhibit also includes reproductions of the authentic Churchill war room bunkers designed for the film "Darkest Hour."
