A look into redesigning an object born out of tradition: the Japanese Tea Bowl
Inspired by an experience I had in Japan, I became interested in the tea ceremony, and the objects used in it. I found that the motions performed in the ceremony are based on the most efficient way of carrying out necessary actions. Looking to apply this refinement to the tea bowls used for the ceremony, I went through the design process, applying all of the research and experiences I had gathered.

The final models use changes in form to indicate key features of the bowl. The flattened face is designated with a design that reflects the season of the bowl. The dips on the sides show where to pick up the bowl, and give a place for the fingers to rest when being handled. The glaze on the inside of the bowl indicates where to drink from, and adds another element of interest from the face side of the bowl.
