Balikpapan Residence

this private residence has a unique form originating from the shape of weapon and shield of ‘Dayak’, an ancient tribe of Kalimantan. The sword and the shield create a combination of exciting shapes with many sharp and strong lines intersect each other.

the project uses a lot of materials from Kalimantan itself such as ulin wood, and plants originating from this island’s rich forests. We try to find the balance of a light and strong looking design.

the most difficult part is exploring so many details of construction like the unique shape of the roof and how it is going to connect with the shields, concrete portals, etc.
