Form Development - The Pandanus Lounge Chair is named from the Pandanus Tree (Pandanus Spiralis). I found inspiration for the chair's form by tracing over the leaves and fruit of the Pandanus Tree. Moving back and forth with sketches and models I found an intriguing form, which feels inviting and reflects the beauty of the Pandanus Tree's spiraling leaves and colorful pod like fruit.

Manufacturing - The Pandanus Chair is made from a cellulose based plastic, which the company developed with commercial production in mind. This sustainable process uses only water, natural additives, and plant fibers, which can be sprayed on to a mold yielding a material with strength similarities to fiberglass. The result is a strong and durable material that is 100% biodegradable since there are no toxic additives.

Stack and Store - Pandanus's lightweight material and open-back design allows for the user to stack multiple chairs on top of one another to maximize space when shipping and storing. When the chairs are stacked the group is reminiscent of the spiraling leaves of the Pandanus Tree.
