The project includes three different concepts for modular textile furniture. They are based on geometric grids, which makes them collapsible and have different assembly mechanisms. All three are made of the same technique, where in MDF pieces are sandwiched between layers foam and fabric. The entire assembly is stitched together using the technique of quilting.
The first concept is a Modular Stool which is based on a geometric grid that collapses with the help of a draw-string mechanism to form a trilateral structure.
The next concept is based on a larger grid to create seating for a number of people.
To fold the structure, bulbs projecting at corners are brought close and tied together with the help of elastic bands. Two to four bulbs can be held together at any point. The bulbs can be tied together in different combinations to create different shapes for seating.
The grid allows the flat piece to get folded in various ways, hence giving flexibility in ways of sitting.
The last concept is derived from the previous one, but behaves as a single unit. The flat piece has four bulbs and four elastic bands in the structure, which when folded, are secured together. The structure serves as a single seating stool and gives some more options of experimenting with the way of sitting.

Modular Textile Furniture

As a part of a project brief to study a public space and propose a textile intervention for a specific need, modular textile furniture was developed to provide seating in an exhibition gallery. As the exhibition gallery is temporary in nature and functions infrequently, the seating is collapsible for it to be stacked and stored easily. Also the fabric used is waterproof, making it easy to clean and maintain. The modular structure allows multiple ways of using the furniture, giving seating solutions for different kinds of events - display exhibition, screening, lectures, workshops, etc.

The structures are based on geometric grids. Using the flexibility of textiles and the strength of wood pieces sandwiched inside, the textile furniture is a light-weight, exciting and fun way to brighten up any boring gallery as well as serve functionally.
