100 person village
In 1990 Donella Meadows published an article entitled "State of the Village Report". The article condensed the world population to 1000, in order to present physical and social statistics with an impact that absolute values fail to provide.
The concept evolved into an e-mail describing a world of 100 people, which circulated the net over the next two decades.
