Mood board: This mood board focuses on material items such as post-modern design and the concrete architecture of the Brutalist movement, as well as moody city landscapes which are illuminated in the night. Music often influences me; in this case, post-punk bands such as Joy Division, Bauhaus, and Killing Joke provided inspiration.
Sketches: Initial Ideation focused on structural, modern forms. If possible, the watch should tell time in a non-traditional manner and should be a statement piece accessory for the wearer. What emerged from sketching were some minimal, yet bulky forms which come across as masculine. After critiquing in class, I concluded that I should focus on the clasp, the bands, as well as the connecting lugs.
Refinements: I moved forward with three concepts I named Division, Warsaw, and Order. I strived for visual clarity, with emphasis on the watch faces. The clasp was further explored here, using a dual button clasp. As a class we concluded to move forward with the Warsaw concept., with some minor critiques: lower the watch hands, place a crystal top over the face, and slim the case body.
The final iteration of Warsaw integrates a slimmer body, lowered watch hands, and removal of some mass from the underside of the case body. The watch hands also adopted an early idea of using colored LED’s to project the time. The resulting watch face is bold, minimal, and attractive.

Warsaw Wristwatch

This was a quick, three-week project where we could redesign a personal accessory. I chose to create a wristwatch for a specific market, with a certain aesthetic, and later would 3D print the final design.
