“Beethoven and Mozart were the Rock Stars of their day.”
The Symphony’s dilemma was that “They needed to attract a younger audience.” Their agency, Henry Russel Bruce, proposed a brochure and posters that put classical musicians in rock concert situations.
They were looking for something abstracted but not cartoony. And energy. Lot’s of energy. What a great project! HRB sent me an illustration sample that showed the amount of abstraction they were looking for. It was a quiet, monochromatic gouache painting of a seated figure.
Of course, rock concerts have bright colored lighting, dynamic energy and lots of drama. I created a sample for the client using oil pastels on black paper and we were off. They practically drew themselves. And the project worked...
