“Imagine my excitement and relief when I learned a carrot a day won’t necessarily keep the eye doctor away.”
This was a nostalgic look back at childhood during the 50’s and 60’s. The Modern Woodmen Magazine article was filled with false warnings our mothers might have given us. “Don’t swim on a full stomach.” “If you cross your eyes too much, they’ll stay that way.” “Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis.”
Bruce Hutton was the designer and he thrilled in giving me over the top complex illustrations. This project could have been that. All of the legends crammed onto one busy page. I did a couple of roughs in that direction but also one based on one myth. The client loved it and the full page, tightly cropped graphic really stood out in their magazine.
The art was drawn with brush and ink to mimic cheesy advertising art of the era. This was scanned, color added and a large halftone pattern applied to the color.
