Sew nice - The cover of the first edition of a weekly micro-tab for the Chronicle-Tribune, Marion, Ind. "Live" is an 8-page insert that focuses on local arts and entertainment in the county the C-T serves. I took the product from idea to prototype to print, and along the way I was challenged to make it look "less like a newspaper," so I channeled my crafty side for the task. Hand-made pieces, supplies scanned for use in pagination program.
Dean- Top 10 - 50 years after his death, the Chronicle-Tribune took an in-depth look at native star James Dean as Warner Bros. I was the clearinghouse for copy and art from numerous sources, and set the style, color palette and overall design for the 48-page tab. This feature was originally Top 50, but I edited it down to 10 due to space constraints.
Gas fever - News centerpiece featuring fever chart as dominant, comparing price and its effect on consumer demand.
The blues
On Guard in Bosnia - "On Guard in Bosnia" was a collaborative project between 3 Gannett papers in the region. Eight-page section was zoned for each paper, with center spread (1 seen here), filled with submitted messages to soldiers, ads, folio lines swapping out in each. I was lead designer and set style for section, did most design, including this spread. Three journalists traveled to Bosnia, delivered copies of special section to National Guardsmen on duty, brought back stories, photos for another section.
Target? - The national spotlight is rarely focused on our county. So when the Daily Show visited a nearby petting zoo, I wanted the page to reflect the humor, while still conveying the news.
Mustard is hot - Feature page with text as dominant.
Staycationing - Long before it was a necessity to turn to local site to satisfy your tourist urges (hello, $4 gasoline!) we put together this roundup of historic sites in our own county.

At the speedway - Photo-graphic mix, a visitor's guide to the local racetrack.
Goin' green - Another edition of our weekly arts/entertainment microtab. Cover story about library class on arts and crafts using recycled materials —including strips cut from magazines — inspired the illustration.
Fantastic - We brought members of a high school pep squad into the studio to illustrate a fun story about how to get ready to support your favorite team. I helped supervise the shoot to make sure we got what we needed.
Drug puzzle - Illustration using studio shots of improvised drug paraphernalia from the police evidence room, complete with key explaining what nefarious uses each can be put to. My concept on the fly.
Blizzard of '07 - I was part of a skeleton crew left to shove the paper out when the storm hit. We put the focus on usability, spotlighting the most important info to those enduring the minor blizzard.
Postcards - When I got a story but no photos for this section front, I strafed Visitors Bureau sites for usable PR photos of some area attractions mentioned in this local travel feature. I decided to carry the theme through to the breakouts as well, presenting them as the flip sides of postcards.
600 jobs, no pictures - Every once in a while, a document is the best way to illustrate a story. Such was the case here. We highlighted interesting pieces from a hush-hush agreement about jobs coming our way.
Access guide - In conjunction with Sunshine Week, we offered readers a guide on how to make use of public access laws to ensure transparency in government. I took a large amount of information and reworked into a usable guide.
