Asylum 1.1

The drawings are a plan and section, respectively, which were exploring the design of a psychiatric institution.
This project consisted of three components: imprisonment, mobility and architecture. I took this idea of outliers being controlled or imprisoned which was particularly relevant to the early psychiatric asylum. This became the imprisonment component of this project - the body trapped within the mind. I wanted the project to be about the patient in a psychiatric institution finding their own way through their illness, so, mobility was addressed in the form of a journey that takes place within the patient’s inner self. Architecture was the desired product - the amalgamation of research and process. I wanted to achieve an architecture that spoke of mental illness, and remedy to it, on an individual level. Meaning that each person would find something different in the work - their own asylum.
