RISD Visiting Designers 2005 Poster - I was hired by the RISD Graphic Design Dept. to design RISD’s annual series of lectures on graphic design. This poster plays on coincidental associations that the visiting companies‘ names have to everyday objects. (an antenna, underwear, an arrow, a megaphone, respectively). The speakers’ backgrounds, ranging from digital media installations, font workshops, graphic design online forums, and motion graphics, translate into an abstract language of pictorial forms within this poster. When viewed from a distance each speaker’s ‘object’ blends into a linear illustration emphasizing the unified diversity within the field of graphic design. Up close, the descriptions of the lectures are placed near each related object in order to demonstrate the significance of the subtlety in everyday objects, especially in terms of graphic design.
Stimmhorn Music Poster - This poster was showcased in Japan. Giving homage to their native homeland of Switzerland, the musical group Stimmhorn, named their album Schnee, which means, "snow." A french hornist and a yodeler comprise the eccentric group: Christian Zhender and Balthasar Streiff. The Poster tries to convey Stimmhorn's musical vibe, which has an air of classical reverence and whimsical frivolity. Using purely typography in the poster, the letterforms begin to take the abstract forms of icicles and rolling hills, with the members' names sliding down the schnee slopes.
Vesper Sophia Product and Concept Design - Vesper Sophia is a high quality, high fashion, unisex, athletic sneaker- versatile- flexible, collapsible and slim, ideal for both walking and biking, accompanied with revolutionary shoe packaging- a shoebox that reflects the character of the Vesper shoe and works off the idea of modular linkage; (like bike chains) it links up to become its own matrix system (think legos), so there are endless in-store, show window, display capabilities. Bike chains started it all conceptually for the logo and shoebox. The shoebox is made of vacuum-formed propylene. The milky translucent bubbles are made of a clear vacuum-formed plastic that was sand-blasted afterwards. The goal was to create an extremely compact, lightweight, recyclable package that’s easier to store and re-use. Also noteworthy, is that the modular shoebox will be the constant for upcoming lines of shoes. The height and size of the shoebox dimensions would differ depending on the shoe’s width and tallness. It also comes with special accoutrements- a bobble and lookbook keychain accessory, branded silk lining hankerchief, and frosted vesper bag. The VESPER logo makes up the sole tread of the shoe.
Arirang Diaspora: LP + CD Packaging - “In the golden age of Asia, Korea was one of its lamp bearers and that lamp is waiting to be lighted once again for the illumination in the east.” -Rabindranath Tagore, March 29, 1929. This compilation is an overview of the cultural evolution of Korea's voice, spanning from the roots of war-torn Korea to present day Korea and its branching cultural impact on the world by establishing multiple generations of immigrants spanning the globe. The package design tries to bridge the gap between the past and the future, with two old and new ways of listening, LPs and CDs. The design was also inspired by the symbolism behind the Korean flag's red and blue ying yang; blue meaning sky, and red meaning earth, both representing a balance in nature and harmony. The undulating curves of the ying yang reverberate throughout the piece to show the constant precarious struggle between the two forces and invoke the flight of the Korean people abroad.
