Left Bee-Hind main character concepts 1st pass.
2nd pass on the main character for Left Bee-Hind. At this point, we decided on 2 favorite body shapes for the main character and began to focus on the smaller details (the antenna and a fuzzy collar.)
Character concepts for the Butterfly character. The butterfly was also called “the grower.” In this game, the butterfly is an obstacle whose wings open and close making it difficult for the main character to navigate around.
Character concepts for the dragonfly (aka the horizontal mover.) In the game the dragonfly maintained a horizontal path moving from one wall to another.
Character concepts for the Venus Flytrap (aka instant kill trap). Like most venus flytraps, this character remains stationary waiting for the opportunity to bite down on his victim. If the main character happens to collide with this obstacle, it means an instant kill for that round.
Early character concepts for the frog character (aka the laser turret.) The frog character is a stationary character who flicks his tongue out at random intervals that the protagonist needs to evade.
Concepts of the vertical and horizontal frog attack. The frog is a stationary character who flicks his tongue out at random intervals that the protagonist needs to evade. Before every attack, the frogs face changes in anticipation.
Character concepts for the grasshopper (aka the vertical mover.) In the game the grasshopper maintains a vertical path moving from the floor to the ceiling.
More character concepts for the grasshopper (aka the vertical mover.) In the game, the grasshopper maintains a vertical path moving from the floor to the ceiling. This page of concepts was intended to illustrate the jumping poses of the grasshopper. (idle, ascending, and descending.)
Character concepts for the spider (aka the vertical mover.) In the game, the spider moves a vertical path moving from the floor to the ceiling.
Character concepts for the mosquito character. The mosquito, like the wasp, is a patroller unit who would randomly move around an area. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, the mosquito was cut from the project.
Character concepts for the Spore character (aka delayed exploder trap). Like the venus flytrap character, this character remains stationary waiting for the opportunity to prey on his victim. If the main character happens to collide with this character, the spore releases tiny spores to announce it’s intention to explode.
Character concepts for the walking stick character (aka the rotator). The walking stick is a giant obstacle that rotates in either a clockwise or counter clockwise direction.
Character concepts for the wasp character. The wasp, like the mosquito, is a patroller unit who would randomly move around an area.
Concepts for the Bee Keeper. For the Bee Keeper, we didn’t want the player to perceive him/her as an evil force, so we kept the bee keeper pretty featureless.
1st pass on the Queen Bee character. The idea was to basically have a very motherly/welcoming queen who is happy about the main character’s return to the hive.
2nd pass on the queen character. At this point, we were doing small tweeks to the character deciding on stripes or no stripes. What most people do not know is that queen bees normally don’t have stripes… so the question was to go for what’s scientifically accurate? or go for what sells the popular idea of a “Queen bee?”
1st Finished cinematic image for Left Bee-Hind. It’s a simple story intentionally told with no words. In this frame, you are introduced to the happy main character…. Unbeknownst to him, his hive is being relocated by a mysterious bee keeper.
2nd Finished cinematic image for Left Bee-Hind. In this frame, our main character realizes that his home is being taken, and he begins to follow the stranger to get back to where he belongs.
3rd Finished cinematic image for Left Bee-Hind. In this frame, our main character is leaving the field of flowers and moving into an unknown swampland filled with strange new creatures.
4th Finished cinematic image for Left Bee-Hind. In this frame, our main character is leaving the swampland and moving into the dark woods.
5th Finished cinematic image for Left Bee-Hind. In this frame, our main character finally makes it to his relocated home. His homecoming is huge with all of his friends in attendance. Unfortunately, the task of the background was reassigned to a different artist and the image above illustrates only my contribution to this scene.

Left Bee-hind

Left Bee-hind is a mobile puzzle game about a bee who has lost his hive and the journey he endures to find his way home. This project has been Oscar Mike Game’s 1st game in the mobile game market. For this project, I designed all the characters, and produced the cinematic cut scenes that tell the story of this small bee.
