The Waterhouse
The brief was to design an innovative tourist attraction for visitors to Belfast. The concept was based on a new Spirituality for a secular age, and used the idea of water with its literal and symbolic healing properties, as the catalyst for a new type of 'Church'. Inspired heavily by the Japanese Onsen and the Zen philosophy, the space uses new technology alongside natural earthy materials to become a space for personal well being and reflection within the bustling city centre.
Neither a spa nor a swimming pool The Waterhouse uses situational design to imitate the properties of a church-like interior, with stained glass, heavy timber doorways, stone and high ceilings.
