An Online Metadata Editor supports creation of a complex, standard-compliant metadata record by answering questions and filling out fields, presented as a set of interconnected online forms. The main challenges were: presentation of hierarchical and conditional information; logical placement of action buttons and instructive texts; minimization of visual load to the extent possible. The main constrain was that the changes had to optimize already existing design without switching to a completely new look and feel.
Solutions: use of empty space and background color for help in visual identification of nested areas and textual prompts; modular presentation of various sections of a form with certain items displayed as needed, specific examples in instructional texts.
