Brief: Design of a range very affordable pendants for 20 to 40-year-old people. Strategic design choice: Research for modular systems which could help reduce the cost and size of packaging, and therefore the costs. Systems could then be used on different designs. My involvement in this project: • design team leader • project / ressources management • concept creation • client & factory interface • product general architecture design • internal component placement & tech integration + design to cost approach
Ikea - Spiral modular felt pendant This simple and trendy pendant uses recycled felt with dual layer technology, the external layer being “hard”, the internal layer being “soft”. This design can be very easily adapted to match the latest colour trends, or provide a rich range of colours, in order to match all tastes/home decorations. The light can pass through the soft felt, which gives more soul to the pendant. The spiral design makes it convenient to manufacture and to fold in a compact packaging, saving lots of carbon emissions.
Ikea - Spiral modular felt pendant This design uses also recycled felt, but this time it is hot stamped, to remove material and create a pattern, a path for the light to pass through the shade. It is also a spiral design, which makes it convenient to manufacture and to fold in a compact packaging, saving lots of carbon emissions. This design can also be easy to match different colour trends or home interiors, but in a single colour.
Ikea - Intrication modular felt pendant This design uses also recycled felt, but uses 2 different colours (here dark and light grey). Each felt part can be inserted and installed by the user to form the lamp’s shade. Users could follow the full pattern (as in the picture) or decide to break the pattern, having dark grey on top and light grey below, or the opposite. Different colours or effects on the felt part could be used to offer a wide range of colours/styles. It is easy to manufacture and to fold in a compact packaging, saving lots of carbon emissions.
Ikea - Hinged modular felt pendant This design uses also recycled felt, with dual layer technology and hot stamping to form patterns. Each felt part can be inserted and installed by the user to form the lamp’s shade. Users could have the light colour inside the shade or outside, or alternate inside/outside bright colour. Different colours or effects on the felt part could be used to offer a wide range of colours/styles. It is easy to manufacture and to fold in a compact packaging, saving lots of carbon emissions.
