Brief:
LaCie wanted to explore the possibilities of new concepts for external hard-drive enclosure. The brief was very opened, by design, to allow more creative solutions. The only constraint was to use a classic 3.5” hard drive. Project was done when 500Gb hard drives were “big”...

Strategic design choice:
Offer a design with a very different outlook. Something never done before with such products and shapes (using a breakthrough technology: 3D metal printing), to give to the product a premium positioning.
My involvement in this project:

Octave is an external high-capacity hard drive (1To), with a simple shape and airy architecture. Octave is silently cooled by an aluminium body (3D printed), and a thin black anodised aluminium grid, for best air circulation and dust blocking. The device has a lacquered white coat, slip resistant rubber pads and a front on/off button. A blue LED indicates read / write status and a white LED indicates that Octave is running. It won a DIA Award in 2018.
