Simple furniture design

The brief was a lightweight, easy to access, less space consuming stool. It was used for short time duration seating. Owing to its nature of use, I decided to design it with soft furnishing material, such as Poly urethane (PU) foam. While finding appropriate material and density of foam, I found an opportunity – “Scrap”!

I acquired foam, webbing strips, junk cycle tyre tubes, and rubber sheets used for soles of footwear from a scrap dealer. I collected all the leftovers and moved on to their assembly, in a way to utilize all the material and come up with a stool.
I started developing the weaving pattern between foam and webbing. The dimensions of the stool could be derived from the material on hand. For instance, a 15” X 15” stool would be due to six layers of 2.5” webbing strips.
The weaving of all four layers of webbing and foam, from bottom to top, shaped up a stool with a seating height of 18”. Best out of the waste, indeed!
