The leading competitive cycling and running app had already mastered the social gamification of exercise. But it was missing a huge, integral part of cycling: the group ride. The group ride already has it’s own built-in competitive streak, and instead of exploiting it, this app was ignoring it. So what could I do to remedy the situation? I studied users, architected a solution and designed an integrated experience that lets cyclists compare themselves head-to-head in the most epic event of them all: the weekly group sufferfest.
