In its most literal sense, Sirenia is an order of fully acquatic, herbivorous mammals that inhabit swamps, rivers, estuaries, marine wetlands, and coastal waters. Derived from the term, Siren, it refers to Greek mythological legends about their discovery which involve lonely sailors mistaking them for mermaids. Throughout time, mermaids have been depicted as enchanters of man-sometimes benevolent, sometimes evil. The mystical and intriguing nature of this creature gave voice to the project, Sirenia, which is an action sports/apparel store for women who enjoy surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. Sirenia appeals to young, trendy, active and upper middle income women ranging from 18-30 years of age. Like the infamous mermaid, Sirenia’s design is complex: it is both raw and natural, while maintaining a playful, beguilling disposition. Using mixed media techniques such as ink drawing, watercolor washes, and colored pencil, Sirenia was born to captivate.
