Since its heyday in the late 19th—early 20th century, Absinthe (an anise flavored spirit with alleged psychoactive properties) has emerged again in the last couple of decades and is enjoying increased popularity. Ethereal Absinthe appeals to a hip, open-minded and creative upper middle income audience, ages 23-35. Inspired by the alleged hallucinogenic nature of the drink, the design of Ethereal Absinthe strives to lure this adventurous demographic in with its otherworldly illustrations.
My illustrations were drawn from the many tales of famous artists and writers finding inspiration in their experience with absinthe’s effects. Bright imagery and disturbing yet intriguing motifs evoke another world. Created by hand with colored pencil on paper, they capture the raw and surreal essence of the absinthe experience. The unique glass bottle and clean type accentuate the bohemian nature of the product, while the metallic accents bring a delicate yet edgy sophistication to the design.
