Salt & Pepper Grinders
The design of a salt & pepper grinder set was based off of the design language of Santiago Calatrava. Calatrava is a Spanish architect, sculptor and structural engineer. He has offices in Zürich, Paris and in New York City, where he now resides. He is most known for his spectacular designs in architecture.
The process began with extensive research on the Calatrava. He has a very personal style that derives from numerous studies of the human body and the natural world. Most of his buildings are constructed with a steel frame and covered in concrete. Color is often used sparingly in the architectural work of Calatrava. Material changes highlight areas of interest instead.
The salt & pepper grinders are directly influenced by the design language of Calatrava and are fully functional prototypes. The grinders are made of soapstone, metal, and ren foamed to give the appearance of concrete.
