I chose the quote "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years" by Abraham Lincoln. To enhance the quote I decided to juxtapose life and death by showing a flower and grave. I included a person in the background to show that they placed the flower in front of the grave, and it also hints at a cycle. I also included rain to add an overall solemn/sober mood to the quote.
1st Draft I drew my idea digitally using SAI Paint Tool. I made the person with the umbrella gender neutral and got rid of the crosses in the graveyard. I also decided to stick with a monotone color scheme with pink as the only accent to highlight the flower. The flower is a carnation instead of a lily because I felt that a pink carnation (unforgettable/I will never forget) had a closer meaning to the quote than a white lily (purity/innocence).
Final Draft I choose a serif font to match the sober tone of the quote and image and lined the bottom of the words with the carnation. I also lightened the part of the gravestone around the flower to lessen the contrast so the carnation and quote would have a better balance. The background is blurred to imitate a picture taken with a camera and I used Photoshop to add textures to the gravestone and flower.
