Central Sculpture Court - The central sculpture court acts as the heart of the building, with the eliptical pouring stage (seen in upper center) acting as a venue for specialized works of art or performance art.
Sloped retaining wall walkway - The art gallery merges with the landscape by use of a 2 storey sloped green roof and retaining wall. This provides a usable outdoor extention as a public park and outdoor sculpture gallery.
Green roof sculpture court - Each outdoor sculpture court acts as a seperated space for displaying thematic content in sculpture by one artist, or by several artists at the same time. Further, they act as year-round public park spaces, encouraging involvment with neighboring residents and the larger community. Art in most cases is a public affair; it is hoped these spaces will facilitate a more meaningful bond between the artist and the community.
Main walkway to feature gallery - This view shows the main walkway to Level 2, which contains the feature gallery, cafe, reception lounge, and exit to the outdoor sculpture park. The formal design of the gallery itself is of a large sculpture: it directly represents the things it contains. Structure, materials, and lighting all become part of a large installation, within which the smaller works are housed.
Cafe looking into central sculpture court - This night view attempts to show the effect of lighting and materials in the main cafe on level 2. The crystalline glazing wraps around the outside courtyard, forming the building's nexus with which everything else radiates.
Drawing study - The basis for most of my formal work in architecture starts as drawings, sketches, sculptures or illustations. Being from a fine art background, I have found that beginning the creative process through art exploration is deeply satisfying, highly charged, and productive.
