The Black Plates, Color Plates, Sculptures 2015-17
The drawings on these ceramic plates most closely resemble the painting and drawing style I am probably best known for: somewhat whimsical semi-animate objects that suggest a cross between organic sources, body parts, and strange functionless tools. They are made through a process called sgraffito, where images are carved into leather-hard clay that has been painted black, similar to working on black scratchboard. They are then fired to Cone 5, a mid range temperature. I see them either as art to be displayed on easel, table, or wall, or as a food-safe functional serving platter.
