Thesis Project...Electric Sharpener - This design is a battery powered sharpener that was designed for the home office. The idea behind this design was that a home office offers the freedom to encorporate fun playful objects into the office space. This design allows people, who still value the comfort of using pencils, to represent their personal style with this sharpener. It has improved in the use by utilizing an angle of entry of 30 degrees. this angle allows the user to sharpen their pencil while the arm is at ease resting on its elbow. The shavings receptacle is also very fun and very easy to use. This design has form driven semantics and has adressed ergonomic issues.
Hand Nozzle & Oscillating Sprinkler - DX Design challenge, GardenSmith. This design was a result of a fast paced team project. We entered this design competition following the requirements of the competition. Both the hand sprayer and the sprinkler are made of metal and were designed with a strong family aesthetic. The aesthetic was derived from examining the armadillo and exoskeletal forms. These garden tools were designed to be durable and withstand everyday use. The exoskeleton not only helps in establishing our family aesthetic it acts as a protection. For example the oscillating shaft is protected from being stepped on or tripped over and broken. The exoskeleton on the hand nozzle protects the hand from the cold water travelling through the tube to the spout. Thus acting as an insulator. The design of the sprinkler only touches the ground at 4 points therefore avoiding the chance of burning the grass. The slots allow for air and light to pass through.
Octopod... - This was a design of a light for children that is made to float in the bathtub. This was an entry in the Coram international design competition. This design was inspired by aquatic life and is to create an enjoyable experience for parents bathing their children. This device floats on the surface of the water emitting light from both the top and bottom in a series of primary colours. These colours are very recognizable by children. Playing with this toy it envokes the senses and develops responses to coulour and motion in young children. This product would utilize inductive charging and therefore require a base for recharging. This design would be ultrasonically welded together and therefore be waterproof. The Octopod would use LED lights that are very durable and extremely long lasting. The Octopod is a very innovative toy that is attractive and useful to children of all ages. As a seconadary light source this product creates an intriguing atmosphere while bathing.
Corkscrew Overmoulding project.. - This was a design of a new handle for a corkscrew. The design criteria for this handle was such that the user could feel comfortable to use the corkscrew while standing up or sitting. The forces needed as well as the grip in each of the two circumstances are very different. The leverage was an important issue. The front of the handle fits the palm of your hand very comfortable to give the user the ability to push upwards while opening wine bottles while sitting. The edges are all rounded to accomodate a full hand grip while standing. This design is very successful and a lot of positive feedback came about. The form also follows the curve of the actual metal corkscrew. The handle was moulded over an existing corkscrew that was purchased for the purpose of this project.
