A fully stocked millinery studio, entirely hand crafted. Braided and sewn rattan and steam blocked miniature hats, habutae silk trimmings, micro polymer flowers, and a variety of other accessories in wood, textile, metal, and glass. 25+ hours 2015 (This is a work inspired by scenery from a Studio Ghibli animated film, but is not an exact replica and is not intended to infringe on the ownership of the original work by Studio Ghibli. I make no claim to ownership of any Studio Ghibli work with this piece, nor with any subsequent images of it, nor do I make claim to any original characters or imagery by Dianna Wynne Jones.)
Left side view
Miniature within miniature scene inspired by the city, Market Chipping. Hand carved houses with natural material accents are part of a forced-perspective view of "The Wastes".
A resin river runs behind Tudor-inspired houses that are appx. 1/144 or "Dollhouse for a dollhouse" scale.
A train engine spews black smoke just as it passes a footbridge, hinting at the iconic scene where Sophie's view is blackened as she works in her studio.
Fully built rail line with hand-hammered copper wire and wood ties and foam 'stone' wall. This portion of the box lies flush to the rear of the build and is only visible by looking through the window, as the character would.
A hidden pop culture reference in one of the supply drawers. (References to "Doctor Who" are being made for parody purposes. Doctor Who is property of creator(s) Sydney Newman, et al, and property of BBC and I make no claim to ownership of any original content.)
