Presented here is a selection of samples, gleaned from my ever-expanding files of concepts, marketed products, and graphics, with multiply earned Design & Mechanical Patents. The end-result is a diverse,"YANKEE-EURO-STYLISTIC" of inventions, designs, and inventively contrived engineering, augmented with "Verbal-Reflections" for each visual image.

This "Mini-Retrospective" of works is "Prologue", in an on-going repertoire of my work. Now in process of development, are concepts, in anticipation as to what new orchestrations might emerge. It's always a surprise to see such things, as I'm a firm believer that "SOMETIMES THE BRAIN HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN".

"Shout-Out" Cadence Game: Players select numbered "Paddles", and in turn, strike them as they call out "Nonsense Words", as written on randomly dealt "Word-Cards". When "paddles" are struck, "White Flags" move upwards from horizontal positions, to vertical positions, resting upon Center Upright Form. Object is to keep momentum flowing at a measured pace, without missing a beat. Game may be in neutral colors, as shown, or molded in multi-hues.

PRODUCED PRODUCT: "CATCH-UP" / FISHING GAME: FISH ARE PLACED OFF-BOARD NEAR BOAT'S HULL. PLAYERS MANIPULATE TWO ENDS OF FISHING LINE ATTACHED TO THEIR HOOK WHICH WILL CATCH AND RAISE FISH TO THE MAST "FOR DRYING". THE FIRST PLAYER TO HOOK AND HANG ALL THEIR FISH FIRST, WINS THE GAME. Produced Parker Brothers Game: "DOG-GONE": Dog Catcher's truck moves clockwise, and player's selected dog or dogs in opposite direction, as per dual-spinner in center of board. Object is for first player to remain with at least one dog "free" on the board.

First rough sketch for "Wish-Bone Game" concept: Stored in the base of the "Turkey", are a designated number of "Wishbones" to be added to the structure, until all the players' "wishes" collapse. Final product will have multi-colored wishbones, for each player, and any number of players may participate. High-impact plastic components.

DEVELOPMENTAL HAND-SKETCH-CONCEPT: "PENNY-PINCHER" GAME: COINS, DISCS, ETC, ARE DROPPED INTO TOP SLOT. THEN SPRING-LOADED HALVES OF TOWER ARE QUICKLY PUSHED CLOSED TO TRAP COINS IN DESIRED CLEAR CELLS, NUMBERED ONE TO FIVE. IT TAKES A QUICK REACTION TO "TRAP" COINS. PLAYERS ARE GIVEN CARDS ON WHICH TO PLACE COINS FOR SCORING. FIRST PLAYER TO FILL ALL CARD'S SPACES, WINS. CLEAR POLYCARBONATE AND OPAQUE STYRENE PARTS. CREATED BY DESIGN / MATTIENE.

DEVELOPMENTAL HAND-SKETCH-CONCEPT: LOLLI-POP POKER. TWO SETS OF THREE DUAL-SIDED DISCS, ENCLOSED IN PODS, ARE PULL BACK ON FLEXIBLE "STALKS", AND SNAPPED AGAINST CENTER WALL, WITH THE GOAL TO LINE UP THREE-IMAGES / CHARACTERS IN-A- ROW. (THE FLEXIBLE-STALK PARADIGM PROVED SUCCESSFUL IN THE CREATION OF THE "QUAKE" GAME). A CREATION OF DESIGN / MATTIENE.

"Bean-Bag-Battle-Bar": Hand-Sketch. By placing the four-paddled spinner at center threaded-rod, opponent's bean-bags are tossed, or thrown, at the paddles, in attempt to drive spinner to either end of designated goal position. Ten "Victory Battles" wins game.

Hand-Sketch - A variation of the threaded-rod game. "Horse-Race". In this design, threaded rod is grooved to accommodate "Horse-Cards". Players strike green "horse show" with colored "riding crops", which drive horse-cards to either end, for scoring rounds.

Hand-sketch: "Bean-Bag-Bus" Pull Toy. Flip the lip and toss the bean bags. One of a series of Mattiene's dual-purpose play-activities. Can be produced in high-impact styrene. To stabilize movement as bags' impact bus "bins", a wheel-clicker movement may help resist any unwanted left or right movement, which may "throw-off" players' perfect aim!

"This-End-Up" Warehouse Strategy Game: Each player must move their colored crates from one side of warehouse floor to the opposite side. Each player has three crates, moving one flip in any direction for each number up on the thrown die, on each turn. First player to move all assigned crates successfully, is declared the winner. The strategy is to move players' crates, in route to destination, while blocking other players positive movements..

Concept Hand-Sketch: "Guess Who": Drop character coins into question-mark in any particular order, then guess which one will drop out first...a fun memory game for one or more players. "Tweazers": A self-contained table and travel activity. Multiple, diverse subject, photo"mini-puzzles" can be assembled into center recess, using magnifier and tweaser (thus the name - teaser / tweaser).

"Topsy-Dorby" Patent Sketch: The Derby in inverted, and players toss rings into the hat, hoping to avoid their ejection. First player's color-coded rings still in the derby wins. High-Impact plastic. *Patented.

"Topsy-Derby" spinning top game: Production product, with differentiated color choices. High-Impact plastic. *Patented.

Hand-built prototype: "Fire-One" / Five Feet of Fun: Perhaps one of Mattiene's most sophisticated games, involving pneumatic-engineering. Object is for players is to "pump" bellows at either end, driving the enclosed missile, in a clear tube, back and forth, in "Tug-of-War" fashion, to reach opposite end, which raises that flag, and rings the bell. Each "successful" destination, reaching the opposing end, is recorded by turning the "scoring collars" at each player's end. Player who scores ten successful scorings, wins the game. Game was televised, with commercial filmed in Greece. Patented.

"Peek and See" Baby-Toy: Hand-held amuser. Child spins yellow wheel which stops at any one of eight characters, which may be view by raising red "tamboured" door. He / She can then "mimic" character's expression in the safely attached polished steel mirror. A 'jingle bell" in the handle is a bonus, when toy is shaken.

"Doodle-Desk-Design-Center": A place for all writings, doodles and design projects. A compact inclined -surface for sketching, coloring, painting, with the tools to make it happen. Integrated "bins" for pencils, chalk, crayons, dry-marks, and a plastic "quill" Bic-Pen holder. The working surface is a chalk-board, and lifts to reveal a spacious cavity to store paper, drawings and other project needs. Easy moved from one place to another. All in durable plastic. *Patented.

Hand-sketch concept of "ALL-IN-ONE DESIGN STUDIO": incorporates a comfortable seat, storage wells for drawing and painting tools, a chalkboard which flips over to create a smooth work and writing surface, a peg-board, an upright drying / display rack, with integrated side-tension grips for finished work. Made of aluminum bracing, with large polypropylene components

"BANJO-BAND": A musical-combo, in a single unit. The front side offers clickers, a two-tone whistle, a strummer, and tambourine. Made of high-impact styrene with aluminum tambourine discs. *Patented.

"BANJO-BAND": A musical-combo in a single unit. Here is the reverse side, with even more sounds to create. The inclusion of a multi-contoured "Wash-Board" design, with a natural-wood agitator, to "excite" those surfaces, complete the rhythmic experience. High-impact plastic. *Patented.

"POUND-A-PEG" / "IT"S-A-STITCH": Using the hammer and nails from the preceding "toolbox - toy" design, two simple toys are created. Natural hardwood horizontal base and vertical upright, with die-cut polyethylene forms, create the straps for "Pound-A-Peg", and the geometric forms for "It's-A-Stitch".

"Traffic Jam" Pegboard: A spin-off of "Pound-a-Peg", using the peg base and hammer, with die-cut vehicle forms (and traffic cop) which may be arranged at will, to form infinite array of traffic scenarios. The black tires have holes in which to place black blow-molded "tire / nails".

Extending Television Metaphor: "NERF-NETWORK TV" a set of TV Broadcast Equipment - See-Through Camera. Microphone, and Earphones. All produced in 1st-Generation Nerf-Foam open-called polyurethane, with injection- molded detail. Camera logo is of printed, laminated, die-cut cardboard.

PRODUCED PRODUCT: "TV-NEWS CAMERA /TRUCK": A FORWARD-LOOKING CAMERA AND MIC-MAN RIDING ATOP A CONTEMPORARY MOBILE-TV-UNIT. THIS UNIQUE TOY NOW "FLIPS SCALE". IT INVERTS TO BECOME A HAND-HELD CAMERA, WITH RED HANDLE, AND POP-OUT GREEN MICROPHONE. TO CONDUCT INTERVIEWS AND ADD REALISM, THE YELLOW CAVITY CONTAINS AN ACTUAL POLYCARBONATE REDUCING-LENS. "Block-Family" Summer-Fun at the beach. Includes dune-buggy, rowing boat, pickup with camper-back, and tow-hitch for pulling dune-buddy. "Block-Family" Ski-Outing Set, with skier's carrier, skis, and ski-slope-tower. *Patented.

"Put-Together / Take-Apart Toolbox: fully assembled (put-together) construction plaything. *Patented.

"Put-Together / Take-Apart Toolbox": A construction and playtime toy, made of natural wood and blow-molded tools and components. Design and Engineering by Mattiene. *Patented.

"CLIMB-ABOARD EXERCISER": for playroom and child-care center. Horsehead "pop-in" can be replaced with vehicle steering wheel, airplane yoke and ship's wheel, for imaginary land, sea, air travel. With a graphic drapes, climber becomes a house, fort, and tunnel. It serves as a high chair, ladder, and exerciser. Made of natural wood, blow-molded, and indestructable "Structural-Plastic-Foam" supports. *Patented.

"Flip-Flop / Clip-Clops": A fun tracking item for the snow or at the beach. Just slide a shoe or bare foot into the reversible, solid plastic forms, and make the tracks of a duck foot or horse hoof in snow or sand. Final design strap would be adjustable to accommodate most kids shoe and foot sizes.

"TRIPLE-TRAVEL-TOY-TOTE": This natural collection of transportation toys, combines three forms of "getting from one place to another" - by land, sea, and air. A steering wheel and gear shift for land vehicles. A cockpit yoke and altitude control for air-flight. A ship's wheel with speed controller, and a communicator, to cross the seas. To top it off, the large center cavity is great for packing small toys, favorite reading materials, and needed craft-materials. All this is in a compact package, with no loose parts.

Hand-Concept-Sketch: "Flight-10: Aircraft number-sorter. The airplane's base has numbered slots, into which illustrated groupings of passengers fit, to achieve a full capacity flight. High-Impact plastic. See panel for sample of passenger groupings.

"Flight-10" Play Set Components: With stylized airplane base previously shown, here a samples of "numbered" passengers and groupings, to be slotted into plane's base. Illustrated passengers are printed, laminated, and die-cut from "credit-card-stock" material for extended play-durability. Toy Concept and Design of Plane Base by Mattiene. "Jet Pilot" detail sheet, showing child-scale, and sample of transparent , interchangeable discs for cross-country and international flights. Design Direction by Mattiene. Final engineering by Douglas Cleminshaw. *Patented.

"Poster-Playthings": Series of mounted posters of actual photographic "backdrops", which spark basis for imaginative play. Here is "747 Cockpit " Photo, 48 inches wide, augmented by dimensional, tactile props, here being control "yokes" and microphone-communicator. Other poster-playthings for series: Spaceship Control Panel, and Submarine Periscope-Plus Controls. For table placement, or with extended supports, so that child may sit on floor, with legs stretched beneath.

Hand-Concept-Sketch: "Front-Wheel-Driver"- Airplane: As landing wheel turns, propeller rotates, and red beacon light flashes intermittently. High-impact and blow-molded components.

Concept Sketch: "Carry-On Cockpit". When closed, a wheeling plane. When open, an equipped cockpit replete with steering yoke, altitude control, and map pocket. Case made of living-hinge polypropylene, with blow-molded components.

Cultural / Geogaphic Play Villages: A total Mattiene redesign, from a third-party design. Animals of solid plastic, with injection-molded items, mounted on vacuum-formed, movable bases, complementing the cultures of Native Americans, Sub-Saharan Africans, and Eskimo Peoples. A cultural informational tri-fold sheet is included with each set.

"I -SPY" Counter: Excellent back-seat car / travel toy. Counts objects up to "99", and "zeroes-out" with the pressing of the "zero-button". Expandable Velcro-attached wrist band holds unit securely. Color shown here vanilla and caramel. Measures 2.25 inches in diameter.

"Votre-Maison": A tempered Masonite, easily-assembled Contemporary Villa with very special qualities. Six durable panels, and a slotted hardwood base. The interior is the unique feature. The full-furnishings of each room: Living, Dining, Bedroom, Kitchen and Bathroom, are "Fully-Integrated", single-vacuum-formed pieces, with no loose parts. Full-color adhering laminated "labels" define surface features: flooring, carpeting, wall decor, etc. Toy is designed as an alternative to many loose furniture-piece houses, which does not preclude playing with such, if purchased separately.

Contemporary "Mini-kitchen / Toybox": A total Redesign / Re-Engineered product, delivered "knocked-down", and easily assembled with 16 screws (driver included). Fabricated of natural hardwood, tempered Masonite, laminated MDF board, with plastic components. Sliding front doors, with mid-board shelf for smaller items. *Patented.

DEVELOPMENTAL HAND-SKETCH-CONCEPT: "BERT'S BARBER SHOP": "MUPPET" OR "SESAME STREET" FINGER PUPPETS ARE TAKING TIME OUT FOR NEEDED GROOMING. CHARACTERS ARE DECORATED ROTATIONALLY MOLDED VINYL. STRUCTURE IS OF HIGH-IMPACT STYRENE, WITH POLISHED STEEL MIRROR FOR REFLECTIVE REALITY. PLASTIC GROOMING TOOLS COMPLETE THE SET. CREATED BY DESIGN / MATTIENE.

Hand-Sketch: "BUSY-BARBER / BUSY SALON": With associated plastic styling tools: hair blower, shears, comb, clippers, etc., this five-patron head matrix simulates the diversity of clientele. This is the Male version. Skip to the next panel, to see typical female heads, which would "plug into" the five-prong matrix. Molded plastic, hair-plugs, and hair-flocking for "close-cuts".

"Busy Salon": Sketches of Female-patron heads, to be "plugged" into five-prong matrix. Implanted hair strands, as in typical doll-making, complements the rotationally-molded, and surface decorated vinyl heads.

First-Blush Rough Sketch for "ALPHA-ZOO Pull-Toy": Combining the elements of a molded plastic carriage, and printed, die-cut, laminated animal-cards, showing the first-letter-spelling of 26 animals, are loaded into the carriage, which can be fitted in only one way, due to the "graduated notch" in each card, which is matched to the "Transverse Spine", located at the base of the carriage. The opposite side of each card may further illustrate set of objects, other than Zoo-Animals, beginning with letters "A" through "Z". Further development being pursued.

DEVELOPMENTAL HAND-CONCEPT-SKETCH: "TATTLE-TALES" FRICTION- ACTIVATED VEHICLES, EACH WITH REFLECTIVE COMIC-STRIP STORY-LINES, PRINTED OF STURDY VINYL STRIPS, WHICH WHEN PULLED OUT, RETRACT AS VEHICLES ARE PROPELLED FORWARD. CREATION OF DESIGN / MATTIENE.

Hand-Concept-Sketch: "Front-Wheel-Driver" - Taxi: Blow-molded and injection-molded parts. Fare-flag clicks up and down, as does gear-shift. Horn activates by pressing pads of steering wheel.

Concept-Sketch: "Travel-Attache': Metro-Cab: when closed a push-toy. When open, a taxi dashboard, with steering wheel, clicking gear shift, movable far-flag, and cash box. Case made of living-hinge polypropylene, with blow-molded component parts.

"Whoa-Mickey": Freewheeling, lightly magnetized tracks to allow smooth descent, yet allow for continued tracking from top to bottom. Injection-molded tracks, with rotationally-molded vinyl-decorated "Mickey".

Concept Sketch: "MILLENIUM BUG": PULL THE FORWARD AND AFT SEGMENTS APART, TO "EXCITE" A SPRING-FRICTION DRIVE, WHICH PROPELS VEHICLE FORWARD. BALLOON-TYPE TIRES ALLOW FOR TRAVERSING LOW-LYING OBSTACLES, WITH LEFT AND RIGHT ARTICULATING MOTION. HIGH-IMPACT PLASTIC, WITH SPRING-MOUNTED AERIAL-BALL.

DEVELOPMENTAL SKETCH-CONCEPT: "RANDY AND ROSIE RIVOTERS": USING MULTI-COLORED VACUUM FORMED PLASTIC STRIPS, RANDY AND ROSIE PRESS THE BOSSES OF THE STRIPS TOGETHER IN ANY VARIETY OF WAYS TO FORM SPACE-FRAMES, STRUCTURES, ANIMALS ETC. "FANCY-FOOT-LOOSE" Sand-and-Snow-Tracker: One of the strangest concepts ever entertained. But, why not...it's a toy!! Its an all-season, outdoor push-toy, which makes tracks with all sorts of foot-ware, and household items. Plastic components.

Concept Sketch: "Splish-Splash, Taking a Bath". The toy I wish I had when little. Suction against a tub or pool wall, all types of water-vessels meandering down the canal-shoot to their open-water destinations. Simple one-piece high-impact styrene channel.

Concept Sketch: "Next Patient": A great complement to existing doctor and nurse medical kits. Repositionable vinyl patient-heads allow for a wide demographic of ages, races, and genders. A turn of the red-crank, delivers the next-patient bedside. High-impact plastic.

"Emergency Van / Case / Medical Kit" 1: Case opens to reveal series of "patients", illustrated on die-cut, laminated cardboard, where stethoscope, syringe, bandages may be applied. See next panel for "living-hinge", open- case detail.

"Emergency Van / Case / Medical Kit" 2: Sample of patient, with tools for healing. Several diverse, folded, laminated "Patients" may be stacked within unit, printable on both sides. See preceding panel for exterior view, which includes patient height-tape. A contemporary advance on the design of traditional doctor and nurse medical kits.

"BEE-HIVE", aka "Beta-Hive": At first glance, a simple child's shape sorter. By extending the concept further, regardless of which language, or alphabet employed, the font-styles chosen can provide an infinite variety of shapes, to correspond with the voids in the hive. All plastic components. For non-Roman letters, as per example, Greek, Hebrew or Arabic, a whole array of forms may be presented. The same may be done for numerals, animal shapes, "bees", etc.

Concept Sketch: "Spaceport-Utopus": A lunar "pegboard" for plugging in space hardware. A later added deeper base-platform will facilitate loading surface components for easy collection and travel.

"Grover's Greasy-Spoon Diner": A finger-puppet "inside / Outside" play set. One of a series of in and out integrated buildings and businesses, where finger-puppets are the patrons. Structures are molded-plastic, with some die-cut cardboard components, and puppets are of rotationally-molded and decorated vinyl.

"Build-A-Picture": By sliding plastic stencil forms around, within the matrix of a molded-plastic frame, a great variety of picture may be created. Paper may be placed over the set-stencils to make rubbings with chalk, pastels or colored pencils, or under for tracing more defined compositions. All injection-molded components.

"Goodie-Cube": a six-sided box for home or travel with virtually no "loose" pieces. Side 1: A peg board with well for loose pegs. Side 2: A recess for any number and size of puzzle-pieces. Side 3: A magnetic boat-activity, with manipulating magnet, accessed through underside, using side 5 access-hand-hole. Side 4: Fishing Game With lake "surface", short fishing pole, and "fish" for testing "angler" dexterity Side 5: Integrated chalk-board / writing surface for personal artwork. Side 6: The afore-indicated "access-hole" for storing boats, puzzle-pieces, pegs, fish, pole, chalk , drawing supplies, and through which to manipulate magnetic boats.

"HINGE-HAMLET": Design your own village, round the block, or in two-stories. Plastic frames allow for storefronts and buildings to be inserted, while natural wood hinge-pins connect the units. Some inserted graphic panels have cut-outs, for vehicles to enter. The panels may have completed graphics, or just outlines, so that the details may be colored-in. Toy vehicles, sized to scale, may be included, along with pedestrian stand-ups.

"89th National Bank" three-foot coin bank: One of a series of 36 inch tall printed foam-core, foldable banks, illustrated with "funky graphics". Concept & structural design by Mattiene. Many also be produced in tin, at 18 inches in height, perhaps with each side, depicting a different structure or geologic formation: Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower, Mount Everest, et al.

Concept Sketch: "Mache' Mason": A modular set of multi-colored, nesting, lightweight, paper-mache' building blocks for any number and design of structures, that may be used as stand-alone structures, as a complements to other toy collections. As illustrated, they may be juxtaposed in any number of ways, and connected securely with round-clips. The rough architectonic, stone-like texture of each module allows for constructing, without much chance of collapsing.

"BYZANTA" Fragrance Decanters Concept: Made of molded or blown-glass, the feminine filigree connotes the eclecticism of the Byzantine Period.

"Erin-Isle" Irish Fragrance Decanters, adorned with Celtic strapwork, reflective of The Book of Kells. May be produced in glass or Waterford Crystal.

"AMI-Va" Male spritzer deodorant decanter line, comprised of variety of scents. By squeezing "trigger", squirting a small stream targets desired area.

"AMORPHOS": Squeeze "Spritz-Fragrance" for men. By pressing center-recess, fine mist is ejected at targeted areas. Refillable. Body of glossy ABS plastic.

"Corporate Wall-Art" 1: Each piece measuring about 48 inches in width, suitable for executive offices or corporate lobby, assemblage pieces are based on tempered Masonite, and covered with varietal textures, fabrics, paint, etc.
