Spaces of the Dead - Architecture which Connotes the Presence of the Absent
SPACES OF THE DEAD is an undergrad research thesis which talks about the response of memorials towards the observer and their efficiency in reinstating the memory of loss, grief and martyrdom in the minds of the visitors. The dissertation focuses on how memorials or other spaces celebrating death in India, post British Rule (1900 CE) till present day, function and communicate with the observers. From the specified time frame, selected cases are studied in detail, and their semiotic analysis thus produced inculcates all the aspects of their spatial and psychological existence. Further delving into the semiotics and underlying essence of these memorials, to comprehend the philosophy applied in their making.
