Project 3 - Primary School - Location Plan - Located in Bristol, adjacent to UWE, the masterplan school site is also flanked by a commercial area to the West and residential land to the South and East. The school is positioned in the West of the site to create a link with the commercial plaza. This provides a safe place for kids to be dropped off and collected. A car drop off zone has been designed on the south boundary. The staff car park is located outside of the fenced boundary to the school, to minimise the risk of children being struck

School Plan - The teaching spaces are located to the North and South of a secure central courtyard. The courtyard is completed on the East by the school hall, and to the West by the admin block, with ICT suite and Library. The library is located near to reception to allow the children help if required. Additional teaching spaces are created within the courtyard and in the nature corner. The internal courtyard provides a sheltered play area. The waiting and collection area can be seen to the West.

Classroom Layouts - The classrooms are designed in pairs, sharing toilets, storage and a group room for shared lessons. They are located in year groups 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and the reception class separate with an outdoor play area. Changes in the floor surface help the children to identify with different areas of the circulation - large block pavers signify an entrance, smaller pavers for circulation routes and asphalt for play areas.

School Elevations - The materials selected are cedar cladding, white render, metal facia to the roof and a brick plinth for wear and tear. This combination of material will give a crisp feel to the school. Inspiration for the form has been taken from Engjaskoli Primary School in Reykjavik , Uti og Inni.

Courtyard Internal Visual - This shows how the courtyard might look and work. The teaching area could develop to be 2 or 3 different areas, with a design to reflect the swooping roof of the class rooms. This would provide the children with a visual marker to teaching zones and admin zones. To the left of the image an idea to help the children identify with different areas can be seen. These would be timber “labels” on the render walls to highlight rooms to children, and can be seen in the section for “Hall” and “Kitchen”.

Service Distribution and Selection Section - The group room is heated by under floor heating and lit by LED lights recessed in the ceiling. This provides a different atmosphere to the classroom (likely to be suspended tubular lights), allowing different teaching to take place. The under floor heating allows the furniture to be varied in each room. The hall is heated by radiant panels and lighting provided by suspended light fittings. (written report and supporting calculations also submitted)

Classroom Construction and Environmental Section - This illustrates the construction method used and the environmental design in the classroom. The construction method is a glulam timber structure with masonry and timber infill. The external circulation can be seen, and needs more consideration to make it work properly. Environmental criteria calcualted using CIBSE models and calculations.

Environmental Section - Project 1A - Designing a Workspace A construction of 140mm steel frame combined with a high level of insulation to give u-values of 0.172 (walls), 0.292 (floor) and .171 (roof). The design also gives rise to the corresponding heat losses, summer temperatures and light levels shown in the drawing. Sash windows allow a high air change rate to reduce summer temperatures.

Construction Details of Workspace - The images here show key construction details to be used in construction and illustrates the requirement for artificial lighting. With the working day assumed to be 8am to 5pm, the workshop requires artificial lighting for 26% of the year for a level of 500 Lux.

Project 1C - Live Work Units - Concept Diagram - The main concept for the development was one of living in a clearing .Each unit is located independently in the forest. The second concept was that of easing future expansion, building from the CSH home for life criteria. Each unit starts as either a single storey 1 bedroom house or 2 storey, 3 bedroom house. The work units start at 50m2 and can be expanded by 25m2 intervals to 100m2 total. This will be aided by the construction method.

Block Plan - This image shows how the different units might relate to each other, with slight variations in their orientations. Each unit also consists of a garage and adjacent bike store.

Unit 2 Ground Floor Plans - Unit 2 is a larger, 3 bedroom dwelling. The live and work buildings are separated by a winter garden. This provides a division between work and life, and allows use of a semi-outdoor space in the winter when the garden may be too wet for example.

Unit 2 First Floor Plans - The master bedroom features a balcony which makes the room feel larger, and offers views into the forest.

Unit 2 Elevations - The style of the buildings are of a rural setting, with the two buildings reflecting the relationship between a farm house and barn. The dwelling is of brick and timber facing, and the workshop of exposed timber construction with brick infill. The winter garden is designed to be organic, taking influence from Sheffield Winter Garden and the form of a caterpillar.
