Roth House: Sunset Blvd. - For this project, myself and two other individuals serve as architects for a group of students and act as clients for another. Our clients program included living space for a family of three as well as retail space for string instruments. They expressed a desire for an open floor plan and unity throughout.

Roth House: Sunset Blvd. - Sitting on a corner amongst heavy vegetation, we as the architects sought to create a clear distinction between the two programatic elements of the structure. The retail space sits along Main Street and is constructed of light colored wood. In contrast, the living space sits within the context of Sunset Blvd's residents. This space is constructed of smooth grey stone (similar to that of Therme Vals).

Roth House: Sunset Blvd. - The two programatic spaces sit along perpendicular axes drawing a distinction between private versus public space. The store and music lesson space sit along busy Main Street while the living space is oriented down quiet Sunset Blvd. The spaces are unified by a partially enclosed porch which runs from the main entrances along Sunset to the back of the space. The porch serves as a public space for entertaining and performances as well as a quiet relaxation space.

Roth House: Sunset Blvd. - Perspective view of from the back porch The back porch is partially covered (starting from the entrance of the home on Sunset Blvd.) with horizontal trusses. This creates shaded space for musical performances and dining. Both the kitchen and practice space can be completely opened to the porch. The porch is divided by vertical columns, where the fire pit and seating outside the master bedroom is located.

Roth House: Sunset Blvd. - This elevation is from the vantage point of Sunset Blvd. The porch starts in the space between the shop (on the right) and the living space (left). The opening marks a clear passage to enter either the living space or the retail space. The porch is covered with a repeating system of wooden slats, serving as shade while also creating an interesting pattern of light below.

Roth House: Sunset Blvd. - Model and site built at 1/4 scale The violin shop is located parallel to main street (seen in wood towards the front) while the living space is situated along Sunset Blvd. The spaces are separated by an occupy-able porch space which connects the front of the house/store to the back.

Roth House: Sunset Blvd. - In order to distinguish the retail space from the living space, the violin shop was constructed of a light wood. The facade of the living space was a repeating pattern of smooth horizontal stones. After doing several detail tests with concrete and stone, this pattern was chosen to appear like the stone pattern in Therme Vals. Grafite was carefully transfered onto mat-board to communicate this material.
